How to Decode Base64 to PNG

When a Base64 PNG Converter Changes Your File

Two different things can happen on Save, and the difference matters more than most tools admit.

Source is already PNG. We hand you the exact bytes that were encoded. Bit depth, colour profile, text chunks, and any 8-bit palette all survive.

Source is something else. The image is drawn onto a canvas and exported as PNG. That rebuild is where things get lost: EXIF metadata goes, the ICC colour profile goes, and the output is always 32-bit RGBA regardless of what went in.

Neither is wrong — they solve different problems. But if you were counting on the camera data surviving, the conversion path will disappoint you.

Converting a JPEG String to PNG Will Not Restore Quality

This is the myth we correct most often. PNG is lossless, so people assume converting to it repairs a compressed image. It does not.

JPEG threw detail away when the file was first saved. Those pixels are gone. PNG then stores the damaged result perfectly, artefacts and all — and charges you a much larger file for the privilege.

For a photograph, staying with JPEG is almost always the better call. Our Base64 to JPG decoder keeps the file small.

Limits Worth Knowing Before You Convert

  • Canvas size caps. Browsers stop at roughly 16,384 pixels per side, and iOS Safari is stricter still.
  • SVG needs dimensions. Without width and height, the canvas has no size to draw into.
  • Animation is lost. A GIF or animated WebP converts to a single still frame.
  • Bit depth is fixed. Output is always 32-bit, even from an 8-bit source.

Every one of these disappears if you skip the conversion. Use the general Base64 image decoder to download the file in its original format instead.

Encoding in the Other Direction

Can I turn a Base64 JPEG into a PNG file here?

Will converting to PNG improve the image quality?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding we see. PNG is lossless going forward, not backwards. Every compression artefact baked into the JPEG is copied faithfully into the PNG, along with a much larger file.

Does saving as PNG give me a transparent background?

Only if the source already had one. PNG supports transparency; it cannot create it. A JPEG has no alpha channel at all, so converting produces a solid image with a PNG wrapper.

Why is my converted PNG so much larger than the JPEG was?

Because PNG stores every pixel exactly while JPEG throws detail away. For a photograph the gap is routinely five to twenty times. It is worse still after a JPEG round trip, since PNG now has to encode the compression noise too.

Does the conversion strip EXIF metadata?

Yes, entirely. Re-encoding through a canvas rebuilds the file from raw pixels, so GPS coordinates, camera settings, and timestamps all disappear. That is a privacy benefit when sharing and a real loss if you needed the data.

What happens to an embedded ICC colour profile?

It is dropped, and the colours can shift slightly as a result. Canvas works in the browser default colour space, so a wide-gamut photo converted this way may look flatter. Decode without converting if colour accuracy matters.

Is the output PNG 8-bit or 32-bit?

Always 32-bit RGBA — that is the only thing a canvas can emit. If your source was an efficient 8-bit palette PNG, the converted file will be noticeably larger. Decoding without conversion keeps the original bit depth.

My Base64 SVG will not convert to PNG. What is wrong?

Usually missing dimensions. An SVG without width and height has no intrinsic size, so the canvas does not know how large to draw it. Add both attributes to the source file and re-encode.

Is there a maximum image size for conversion?

Browsers cap canvas dimensions, commonly around 16,384 pixels per side, and iOS Safari is stricter about total pixel area. Very large images fail silently or come back blank. Plain decoding has no such limit.

Can I decode without converting, to keep the file identical?
