Your phone fills up faster than it should, or your photos will not open on somebody else's computer. Both problems point at the same decision, and the advice online is mostly Apple's press material repeated back at you. The honest answer to heic vs jpg depends on where your photos end up.
HEIC wins on efficiency and colour. JPG wins everywhere the file leaves your control. Here is how to weigh that without inventing numbers.
The heic file size comparison nobody can verify easily
HEIC files are smaller. That much is not in dispute and it is the format's entire reason for existing.
What we will not do is give you a precise percentage. The commonly quoted figure of about half comes from Apple, and every article repeating it is repeating a vendor claim rather than a measurement.
We tried to measure it ourselves and could not, which is instructive. HEVC encoding is patent-licensed, and our image toolchain flatly refuses to produce HEIC — the error says the compression is unsupported. We can write AVIF, which is the royalty-free equivalent, and not the format Apple actually uses.
That limitation is the real story. The reason nobody independent publishes a clean comparison is the same reason Windows charges for half the codec support and free HEIC tools are scarce.
What you can trust: HEVC is a far more modern codec than JPEG, designed decades later with vastly more computing power assumed. It compresses better. The margin varies enormously with subject matter.
Does heic lose quality compared to JPG?
Both are lossy. Neither gives you the sensor data back.
At matched file sizes HEIC holds more detail, because the codec is better. At matched quality settings HEIC produces a smaller file. Either way you are choosing where to spend the same budget.
The trap is conversion. Every time you turn a HEIC into a JPG you add a second generation of loss on top of the first. Once is invisible on a normal photo. Doing it repeatedly — convert, edit, save, convert again — accumulates in a way that eventually shows.
Our advice to clients is simple: keep the original, generate copies. Never let a converted file become the only version you have.
What 10-bit colour depth actually buys you
HEIC can store ten bits per colour channel. JPEG stops at eight.
Eight bits gives 256 steps per channel, ten gives 1024. More steps means smoother transitions, and the place you notice is gradients — a clear sky fading from deep blue to pale, or skin tones under soft light. With eight bits those sometimes break into visible bands.
Two honest caveats. Most displays are eight-bit anyway, so the extra information is discarded at the last step. And every browser-based viewer, ours included, decodes through an eight-bit canvas, so if you mostly look at photos on the web you never see the benefit.
It matters if you edit. Extra bits give you room to push exposure and colour before banding appears, which is a real advantage in a photo you plan to work on.
Which format for printing and sending
JPG, comfortably, and not because it is better.
Print services, photo books, framing shops and photo kiosks overwhelmingly want JPEG. Some accept TIFF. HEIC support is rare enough that assuming it is a mistake.
The same applies to anything with an upload form. Job applications, insurance claims, government portals, older content systems — JPEG is the format that never causes a phone call.
Convert for these and keep your original. Convert HEIC to JPG at a high quality setting and the loss will not survive contact with a printer's own processing anyway.
The long term photo archiving question
Here HEIC's advantages stop mattering and one disadvantage becomes the whole argument.
JPEG is thirty years old, patent-free, and readable by literally everything. Any device you find in a drawer in 2050 will open a JPEG.
HEIC depends on a licensed codec. That licence is why Windows does not ship the decoder by default, why free software support is patchy, and why our own tools cannot write the format. Formats that depend on commercial licensing decisions have a worse record of surviving than formats that do not.
We would not tell anyone to convert a whole library on this basis — the quality loss and storage cost are real and immediate, while the risk is speculative. But if you are choosing what to put on an archive drive you will not touch for a decade, durability is a reasonable thing to optimise for.
Whatever you choose, read the metadata before converting. Conversion strips it, and capture dates are the part people miss most. You can inspect a photo's real capture settings in a few seconds, and it is worth doing before the information is gone.

So which should you use?
Keep shooting HEIC if your photos live on Apple devices and iCloud. You get smaller files and better colour for free, and iOS converts automatically in most sharing paths, so the incompatibility rarely surfaces.
Switch to JPEG if you regularly hand original files to other people, import into older desktop software, or work with anyone on a locked-down Windows machine. Switching your camera back to JPEG takes two settings rather than one, and neither affects photos you have already taken.
The middle path suits most people: leave HEIC on, and convert the specific files that need it. That gets you the storage saving on thousands of photos and the compatibility on the handful you actually send.

Neither format is better in the abstract. HEIC is technically superior and JPG is universally readable, and which one wins depends entirely on whether your photo has to work on somebody else's machine.
The heic vs jpg question is really a question about your workflow. Photos that stay home should stay HEIC. Photos that travel should travel as JPG. Keeping originals in one and copies in the other costs you almost nothing and avoids every version of this problem.
