How to Stop Your iPhone from Saving Photos as HEIC
If you do not want your iPhone to save photos as HEIC in the future, you can change this in your settings. Here is how:

Frequently asked questions
Does converting to JPG keep the date the photo was taken?
No. Decoding runs through a canvas, and a canvas carries pixels and nothing else, so the converted JPG has no capture date, no camera model and no coordinates. Read those before you convert if you need them, because the converted copy will not have them and cannot get them back.
What happens if my browser cannot decode one of the files?
It is marked failed and nothing else happens to it. Earlier versions of this page quietly uploaded the file to our server at that point and converted it there, which contradicted the privacy promise on the same page. We removed that. A failure now stays a failure and your photo stays with you.
Why does my converted JPG look slightly softer than the HEIC?
Two lossy steps rather than one. The HEIC was compressed when your phone wrote it, and JPEG compresses again on the way out. At the default quality the difference is hard to see, but it compounds if you convert the same photo repeatedly. Raise the quality slider if you plan to edit afterwards.
Is the JPG bigger or smaller than the HEIC I started with?
Almost always bigger, often by a lot. HEVC compresses far harder than JPEG at the same visible quality, which is exactly why Apple adopted it. Converting a phone library to JPG for compatibility can noticeably increase how much space it takes.
Will the photo rotate the wrong way after conversion?
Sometimes, and orientation metadata is the reason. Phones often record the picture in one orientation and add a tag telling viewers to rotate it. Decoding applies the rotation and then drops the tag, which is correct — but software that double-applies it will show a sideways image.
Can I convert a Live Photo to JPG?
You get the still frame only. A Live Photo is a HEIC image paired with a separate video file, and copying it off an iPhone usually breaks the pairing anyway. The JPG you get is the still, which is what most people wanted.
Why did a photo that opens fine on my iPhone fail here?
The file that reached your computer is probably not the file on your phone. Interrupted transfers are the usual cause, and they leave a valid header with missing data behind it. Our file checker compares the declared sizes against the real size and tells you whether that is what happened.
Does the quality slider affect how long conversion takes?
Barely. Nearly all the time goes on decoding the HEVC picture, which happens before the quality setting is used at all. Encoding the JPEG afterwards is quick at any setting, so a high quality costs you file size rather than waiting.
Can I convert hundreds of photos in one go?
Technically yes, and we would not recommend it. Each decode needs several times the file size in memory, and a large batch can exhaust the tab and lose the lot. Batches of twenty or thirty finish reliably on most machines.
Should I keep the original HEIC after converting?
Yes, if you have the space. The HEIC is the higher-quality original and the JPG is a lossy copy made for compatibility. Deleting the original leaves you with the compromise version permanently, and there is no way back to the quality you started with.
